Breast Cancer Surgeon Fights Breast Cancer

She calls it the hardest part of her job, having to tell her patients they have breast cancer. It wasn’t long ago when she was on the other side of that conversation. In 2007, Rebecca Baskin found a lump in her breast and she just knew something wasn’t right. She was right. Baskin found out she had breast cancer at 36. Baskin, who’s a breast surgeon at Saint Thomas Rutherford in Murfreesboro, went from doctor to patient. She had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and is now cancer-free.

Having had breast cancer, Baskin says it gives her a new perspective on what her patients are going through making her more empathetic than sympathetic. She’s not the only one in her practice who feels empathetic toward the patients. Watch the story to find out more.
